"The opposite of addiction isn't sobriety, it's connection." This conclusion is based on the work of Dr. Bruce Alexander, who posited in the 1970's that a person is more likely to overcome his addiction if his *environment* were changed, and not simply by weaning himself of any particular drug or destructive behavior. It's the isolating, metaphorical "cages" that many addicts find themselves in that makes it difficult for them to break free from the cycle of addiction.

Since then, others have also concluded that when humans are able to exercise their innate need to bond and form meaningful connections with those around them, addiction is less likely to occur. "Addiction is but one of the symptoms of the crisis of disconnection" that's happening in our society. At UB2, we believe that one of the ways to help our members combat addiction, or isolation-fueled depression that often goes hand-in-hand with an HIV diagnosis, is to offer them a community that they can join where they feel supported and form meaningful relationships with others who understand what they're going through.
